On March 28, 2008 the Maricopa Area Labor Federation (MALF) Education
Committee finalized the criteria for the 2008 Andy Ward Memorial Scholarship.
Three scholarships, each in the amount of $1,000, will be offered. The
scholarships are made possible through generous donations from American Income
Life and Labor's Community Service Agency.
Attached you will find three files regarding the 2008 Andy Ward Memorial
Scholarship. The files contain a cover letter, information sheet and
application. Please feel free to copy the information and make it available to
your members through your websites, newsletters, bulletin boards or any other
means. As you will note, the scholarship is available to members and their
dependents of local unions affiliated with the MALF. The
deadline for submission of the application and
related materials is Friday, June 13th 2008.

The Maricopa Area Labor Federation is pleased to again be sponsoring the Andy Ward Memorial Scholarship. Three scholarships, each in the amount of $1,000, will be offered in 2008. The scholarships are made possible by the generosity of Labor’s Community Service Agency and American Income Life.
This letter includes an application form and a 2008 scholarship information sheet that sets out the specific criteria for applicants to follow.

The applications will be evaluated by the education committee of the Maricopa Area Labor Federation. The winners will be invited to the June 25, 2008 delegate meeting of the Maricopa Area Labor Federation to receive their awards.

2008 Andy Ward Memorial Scholarship
Information Sheet
There will be three (3) $1,000 Scholarships awarded in 2008.
Eligibility criteria: Eligible applicants must be a member of a local union affiliated with the Maricopa County Area Labor Federation or a dependent of a union member in good standing affiliated with the Maricopa Area Labor Federation who will be pursuing post secondary education in 2008.
The applicant must submit a letter of acceptance or similar documentation from the school they plan to attend.
All applicants must submit a completed Scholarship Application and a personal vision statement in response to the following prompt:
Ø Submit a statement, not to exceed one page, in which you state your academic and career goals. In this statement explain how your continuing education, in combination with other activities, such as participation in school or community organizations, will help you attain those goals.
In addition to these two basic requirements, applicants will be asked to write and submit a 1,000 to 1,500-word research paper on the following topic:
Ø How has organized labor contributed to the welfare of the American worker since the end of World War II? In developing an answer to this question, cite statistical data and research to defend your position. Do not rely on opinion.
Applicants may use any source available to them for this paper, but the paper must be their own work and should be in a standard research paper style, such as M.L.A. (Modern Language Association), including a bibliography and footnotes. . Errors in spelling, sentence structure, punctuation, or grammar will reduce the paper’s evaluation.
The submitted copy should be typed and double-spaced. The applicant must submit a cover letter that identifies the applicant with the research paper. DO NOT PUT YOUR NAME, ADDRESS OR UNION AFFILIATION ON YOUR COMPLETED RESEARCH PAPER.
The submission deadline for applications is Friday, June 13, 2008. There will be no exceptions to this date. Applications should be submitted to:
